Quick guide: how to 3D print a QR code that scans first time

    Contrast is everything

Phones read a QR code from the colour difference between the modules and the background, not from the relief. That is why the 3MF file holds two parts in two colours: the base and the raised code. The safest choice is a light base (white, beige, yellow) and a dark code (black, navy, burgundy). The tool checks the contrast and warns you if it is too low.

    Minimum module size

Each module of the code should be at least 1.5 mm so a 0.4 mm nozzle draws it with crisp corners. If the warning turns red, make the object bigger or use a shorter link: fewer characters means fewer, larger modules.

    Recommended print settings

    • Layer height 0.12–0.2 mm and relief 1–1.5 mm.
    • Print the keychain and the sign flat, QR code facing up.
    • The table stand is designed to print upright, with no supports.
    • With a single extruder, add a filament change at the layer where the relief starts.
    • With an AMS, MMU or similar, assign one filament to each part and you're done.

    3MF or STL?

Use 3MF whenever you can: it keeps both parts, the colours and the dimensions in a single file. STL has no colours; we provide it as two files (base and relief) for older software.

    Frequently asked questions

What is a 3MF file and why is it better than STL?

3MF is the modern 3D printing format. Unlike STL, it stores several parts, their colours and their units in a single file. When you open it in Bambu Studio, OrcaSlicer, PrusaSlicer or Cura, the base and the raised QR code appear as two separate parts, ready to assign a filament to each.

Can a 3D printed QR code be scanned?

Yes, as long as there is good contrast between base and relief (for example, a white base and a black code) and each QR module is at least 1.5 mm. The tool warns you live if the contrast or the size isn't enough.

How do I print the QR code in two colours with a single-extruder printer?

Use a filament change at a layer: in your slicer, add a pause or colour change right at the layer where the relief starts. The base comes out in one colour and the raised code in another.

What is the minimum size for a QR code keychain?

For short links, a QR code of about 35–40 mm is usually enough. The longer the link, the more modules the code has and the bigger the keychain must be. Use a link shortener if the size warning turns red.

Can I make a Wi-Fi QR code to 3D print?

Yes. Choose the Wi-Fi option, type the network name and password, and your guests will connect by scanning it without typing anything. Ideal for holiday lets, hotels and cafés.

Does the QR code expire or cost anything?

No. The QR code you create contains your link directly, with no redirects or middlemen, so it works forever and is completely free. If your link changes, you'll need to create and print a new one.

Is my data uploaded to a server?

No. The whole design and the 3D files are created in your own browser. Your link, your logo and your Wi-Fi password never leave your device.

What is the best filament for a 3D printed QR code?

For the raised code, dark matte PLA (black, navy, purple): it has no glare and phones read it better. For the base you can be more creative: white, wood, marble, glow-in-the-dark or silk PLA. Avoid shiny or silk filaments on the code, because reflections make scanning harder.

Which 3D printer should I buy for QR keychains and stands?

To get started, a compact printer with a 4-colour system, like the Bambu Lab A1 mini Combo, is the easiest. For large signs or batches of many parts, choose one with a bed of about 25 × 25 cm, like the Bambu Lab A1 Combo. The “Printers” tab in the kit section has the full comparison by budget.

Which printers and software does it work with?

The 3MF file opens in Bambu Studio, OrcaSlicer, PrusaSlicer, Cura, Creality Print and most current software. For older printers or software we also offer an STL download, with the base and the relief as two separate files.
